The Alpha Institute for AI Governance is the first independent research institution dedicated to advancing the science of AI governance for corporate boards and executive leadership. It publishes standardized AI governance ratings for public companies, boards, and individual directors using The Alpha Standard methodology.

## THE ALPHA STANDARD

The Alpha Standard is the complete rating methodology used by the Alpha Institute. It consists of four phases:

### Phase 1: Alpha Materiality Profile
Assesses how material AI is to a given company across 4 dimensions:
- Market Position & Influence (30%)
- Enterprise AI Footprint (25%)
- AI Dependency & Integration Risk (25%)
- Regulatory Exposure & Sensitivity (20%)

### Phase 2: The Alpha 8
The 8 governance dimensions used to evaluate AI governance quality:
1. Leadership & Accountability (12.5%)
2. AI Safety Practices (12.5%)
3. Transparency & Disclosure (12.5%)
4. Data Ethics & Privacy (12.5%)
5. Governance Infrastructure (12.5%)
6. Fairness & Bias Mitigation (12.5%)
7. Societal & Workforce Impact (12.5%)
8. Regulatory & Compliance Posture (12.5%)

### Phase 3: Alpha Integrity Screen
Negative screening across 5 concern dimensions with ceiling logic:
- Disqualifying findings cap at D
- Severe findings cap at CCC
- Two or more Elevated findings cap at BB
- One Elevated finding caps at A

### Phase 4: Rating Determination
The Alpha Rating Committee convenes to determine final grades using the Alpha Governance Scale.

**Laggards Tier:**
- CCC: Very Weak Governance
- CC: Extremely Weak Governance
- C: Near-Failure Governance

**Disqualified:**
- D: Governance Failure

**Not Rated:**
- NR: Insufficient data or pending assessment
